Always helping one another and making sure people are able to get hands on experience with the little resources they have at home.PS C :\KIT\VMW> Add-EsxSoftwarePackage -ImageProfile ESXi-7.0.0-15843807-standard-RTL8111 -SoftwarePackage net55-r8168 Add-EsxSoftwarePackage : VIB Realtek_bootbank_net55-r8168_8.045a-napi requires -9.2.2.0, but the I have not yet tested this myself, and of course this is completely unsupported by VMware! Use at your own risk, but – honestly – I expect it to just work …Īs Andreas points out this is totally unsupported by VMware! But hey, it’s your homelab so probably most of it is unsupported -P So I have used the ESXi-Customizer-PS script to build a custom ESXi 6.7 ISO image.
#Vmware esxi 6.7 realtek 8168 upgrade
I have finally been able to upgrade my home lab from esxi 6.7 to esxi7. The Odroid-H2 uses the Realtec 8168 Gigabit Ethernet NIC, which is NOT on the VMware Compatibility List I have then discussed various approaches with David Chung, and one of his ideas was to build a custom ISO image that includes the network driver.

(right-click the above link and save as …) In this case, Realtek should join VMwares Development program so that they can build and provide drivers to their end-customers just like any other vendor in our eco-system program. If you need the VIB file for injecting into an installation ISO or offline installation then you can download it from It might be this is not needed in your situation, though.

If your host is already installed and has a direct Internet connection then you can install it from an ESXi shell by running the following commands:Įsxcli software acceptance set –level=CommunitySupportedĮsxcli network firewall ruleset set -e true -r httpClientĮsxcli software vib install -n net51-drivers -d Īs you can see I had to add the –no-sig-check to install the vib. Ethernet controller 0200: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Here is a workaround for you … I have created a package that includes the original VMware net-r8168, net-r8169, net-sky2 and net-s2io drivers and uses the name (net51-drivers), and published it on my V-Front Online Depot. I gave it 4 stars because the card is not supported in VMware ESXI.
During this search I came across this workaround (login needed) by Andreas Peetz explaining a method to install the drivers onto the vSphere host(s) in your environment. Keep in mind these drivers are NOT supported by VMware and should be used at your own risk. However, if you want to install ESXi 5.x and 6.x (7.x is not supported) with the Realtek drivers, then users will have to create a custom ISO. One of those problems is that (as with vSphere 5.5) certain not supported hardware are the onboard realtek NICs on the cheaper “homelab” motherboards. ESXi no longer supports Realtek Network drivers nor are they included on the installation ISO. During the beta fase of vSphere 6 I was looking for a couple of workarounds for problems during installation process in my homelab.
